Is America a Democracy or a Republic? We have heard the voices of politicians. military leaders, entertainers, etc say that America is a Democracy. The question is what does it say in the Pledge of Allegiance of the United States of America written by Francis Bellamy in 1892?
It's says," I pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands.....". Notice, that it doesn't say Democracy for which it stands. It says Republic. Why would the founding fathers make this country a democracy when in the U.S Constitution there is freedom of speech, freedom of religion to assemble? What did the founding father really want for this country? It was freedom. Why? Many who fled to America were fleeding religious persecution. What they founding father actually wanted was a nation without a King and Church without a Pope. This can be seen and is evident in America separate church and state system. In the system that many fled from the Pope control the church and the state. The founding fathers didn't want this for themselves or others.
I'm I saying that Papal Rome form of government was a Democracy? No! What I'm saying is that a Democracy in it purest form would limit the rights and freedoms of individuals. Under the Pagan Roman system this was the case. So, what really is a Democracy?
"The Constitution guarantees to every state a Republican form of government (Art. 4, Sec. 4). No state may join the United States unless it is a Republic. Our Republic is one dedicated to "liberty and justice for all." Minority individual rights are the priority. The people have natural rights instead of civil rights. The people are protected by the Bill of Rights from the majority. One vote in a jury can stop all of the majority from depriving any one of the people of his rights; this would not be so if the United States were a democracy. (see People's rights vs Citizens' rights)
