The Massacre in Wilmington, NC in 1898 reveals the ugliest side of one race trying to maintain their heritage. This attempt to maintain one race heritage resulted in exterminating another. Those that did the extermination thought that it was a good thing. Wilmington , NC will never be the same. It would have been better to exist as a human race than a white or black race. The reverberation of that day can be felt even today. We can see the cultural divide. We can see the color-lines draw. We can feel the tension when the slightest conflict come about. But, for what reason did one group think that this was a necessary evil. All this did was to instilled a hated that may never be overcome not even by a million apologies. It created a tension that will divide a historically prospering small town forever.
